About Songwood Haven Farm

Songwood Haven Farm is a small farm, nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of southeast Kentucky.  Here, I am breeding and raising ADCA-registered Irish Dexter cattle, with a goal to produce high quality, truly dual-purpose, purebred Dexter breeding stock, and to raise and train small family milk cows.

Songwood Haven Farm – a new name for a new season.

Growing up in the dairy-country of Lancaster Co, PA, I have always loved the country life.  When I learned about Dexters, I decided that was the breed for me, but when I realized how difficult it is to find a Dexter milk cow, I decided to develop a breeding program to help provide family milk cows for others with the same interest.  As well as milking my cows, I also raise most of my Dexter bull calves as beef steers for all-natural, grass-fed beef, to share with friends & family.

As more people become aware of the atrocities in our industrial food supply and begin to raise more of their own food, I believe that a small-sized, truly dual-purpose cow can help them in their effort to be self-sufficient and provide healthy food for their family.  My breeding program goal is to produce high quality, functional cattle true to the breed’s original form & purpose.  Since there are quite a few Dexters out there who don’t quite measure up to what they were originally intended to be, I want my animals to help restore the credibility that the breed deserves as a productive homestead cow.

What’s in a Name?

Songwood Haven:  This new property is definitely a haven for me.  There’s always a song in the trees out here.  Whether it’s just the wind, or songbirds, or the tree frogs, Nature’s beautiful music fills this place.  Being here on my own marks the beginning of a new season of life for me.  And I am reminded of these words from Song of Solomon:

“See!  The winter is past; the rains are over and gone.  Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come…”

So, Welcome to Songwood Haven Farm!  Make yourself at home!
